Ze-Gen - Turning Construction Waste to Clean Energy

Using large amounts of organic based waste, primarily landfill-bound waste wood from commercial construction sites, Ze-Gen has developed a closed loop, single step gasification system that turns carbon based wastes into synthetic gas products, or syngas. This syngas is a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas, easily converted to diesel fuel. Syngas is an ideal, cleaner burning replacement for fossil fuels in conventional combined heat & power units and power generation systems.

Upon further funding and commercial scale production the low input energy Syngas will be a cost effective and more ecologically friendly alternative to current wasteful biofuel industries.

Their Description:

Gasification converts carbon-containing material to a synthesis gas, better known as syngas. This syngas is a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas. Syngas is an ideal replacement for fossil fuels in conventional combined heat & power units and power generation systems.

Ze-gen's technology employs liquid metal as a catalyst to convert waste material into synthesis gas through a chemical reduction process, resulting in the complete breakdown of complex hydrocarbons. Together these gases form the building blocks for liquid fuel production or other industrial processes.

Syngas is 50% the density of natural gas and it can be used as a fuel source in the same way as natural gas.

Ze-gen's high-quality syngas renewable energy uses:

  • Can replace natural gas or residual oil for industrial burner use, including boilers
  • Can be used to generate renewable electricity
  • Can be processed into liquid fuels such as green diesel
  • Can serve as a catalyst for thermal ethanol generation
  • Can be used to refine crude oil

In contrast to waste-to-energy technologies that produce power by burning wastes to generate steam, Ze-gen's gasification technology makes syngas that can efficiently combusted in gas turbines to make clean, low-cost electricity.

Our process begins after the waste feedstock has already separated from all recoverable and recyclable material. Take a look at Ze-gen's innovative advanced gasification system:

1.

Currently, Ze-gen's demonstration facility turns wood pellets and waste wood resulting from construction & demolition debris (C&D) into renewable energy. C&D consists of the debris generated during the construction, renovation, and demolition of buildings, roads, and bridges. The C&D that Ze-gen uses is post-recycled residual material that has been processed at the New Bedford Waste Services facility, which is also the home of Ze-gen's demonstration plant.

2.

Ze-gen believes the advantage of Liquid Metal Gasification (LMG) in solving this economic challenge lies in the ability of liquid metal to transfer an enormous amount of heat to incoming waste streams at a very high efficiency. The precise engineering of our system minimizes heat loss to the external environment, transferring all workable heat to the materials to be gasified. Highly controlled, stoichiometric amounts of oxygen are added to the gasifier to convert carbon in the waste stream to carbon monoxide, an energy-rich gas. Hydrogen, a second energy-rich gas, is released from the waste during the gasification process.

3.

What emerges from the liquid metal system is an energy power stream of what the industry calls syngas: a blend of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Syngas is an ideal replacement for fossil fuels in conventional combined heat & power units and power generation systems.
